The Crit

At the time of the crit my film was still an experiment in editing. There was no concept or real narrative, rather a collection of knitted together clips. However, I still wanted to see it on a big screen....and I liked it.

Ross Sinclair

I remember sitting in the church, years ago and liking it but not knowing why. It was in GoMA I think, and I went back a fair few times. I'm looking again because I'm thinking about different ways to incorporate film into what I already, or might yet, do.....The neon sign made me smile too though.

Mantegna

hmmmn...it is good, really good, but I still think I like Dorothy Cross better. Hers made me laugh out loud. A funny feminist...at last. (although I don't think it's meant to be funny..........no.........definitely not funny).

Caravaggio

Edward Hopper

I've been thinking about how to film my film...and had a need to look at some painters. It's taking me so long to figure out the technology involved, that I reckon I might as well enjoy some painting and look at what these people do with space.

I really love the colour too in these works by Hopper.

"I pop the video in, and wow… Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps… Wow. [I felt like] I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn't mine anymore… It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, about a bleak and desperate place I was in, totally isolated and alone. [Somehow] that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning — different, but every bit as pure." Trent Reznor speaking in Alternative press in 2004.

The video was nominated for seven VMAs, winning one for cinematography, and also won Romanek his third Grammy.

Graham Gussin

Tate Britain| Past Exhibitions | Art Now: Graham Gussin

"All of Graham Gussin's work engages in some way with the human experience of the infinite. He is conscious that our perception and understanding of the world is manipulated and transformed by a complex layering of mass communications and consumer culture. Often his work suggests a sense of displacement, playing on our desire to be somewhere else, in a different time or space."
